How to Find Data

Use these tips to quickly find the information you're looking for

  • Use plain-language keywords to narrow down your search results. Before searching, spend a minute reviewing our Glossary of Terms to get familiar with data lingo.
  • Speaking of keywords, you can also use those to browse!
  • Once you've found a dataset you're interested in, the data preview and catalog will clarify whether that particular dataset will meet your needs.
  • Check out the help section and our pre-made dashboards. You might be able to skip the analysis and get right to the information you need.

How this portal is organized

If keyword searches haven't worked out, or you just want to browse, here's how to navigate the hierarchy.

The main feature of this portal is a catalog of City data. The catalog is a list of the datasets published on the portal, and each entry has a basic description. The catalog can be filtered by publishing department, and tag.

Click a catalog entry to access the dataset. The dataset is a collection of downloadable files, called distributions. Some datasets have multiple distributions of the same data so we can provide the data in multiple formats or pre-filtered for ease of use.

A distribution is the single file or API available to access from the dataset page. We only provide distributions that are in a machine-readable format, including .csv, .json, .geojson, .zip, and .xml.

Browsing shortcuts

Topics and departments are a good way to narrow down the catalog. You can even get a description of each topic and department to understand which are relevant to your search.
